How to price baked goods, the fair way
Most home bakers undercharge because they only count ingredients. A fair price covers four things before any profit.
- 1
Ingredients
Enter what you pay for a bag, carton or block once. Fairbake converts it to whatever your recipe uses: cups, tablespoons, grams, ounces or single eggs.
- 2
Packaging & extras
Boxes, bags, liners, labels, cake boards. Small costs that add up fast when you sell by the dozen.
- 3
Your time
Hands-on minutes for mixing, baking, decorating, packing and cleaning, at an hourly rate you choose. Your time is a cost, not a bonus.
- 4
Overhead & margin
A share of electricity, equipment and fees, then a profit margin on top so the business can grow.
Price per item = (ingredients + packaging + labor + extras) × (1 + overhead %) ÷ items in the batch ÷ (1 − margin %)
Example: a batch that truly costs $36 and makes 24 cookies costs $1.50 each. At a 40% margin, the price is $1.50 ÷ 0.60 = $2.50. That is a 67% markup, which is why “margin” and “markup” are not the same number.

Questions
Is Fairbake really free?
Yes. The full calculator, with unlimited recipes and ingredients, labor, packaging, overhead, margins, scaling and printable cost sheets, is free with no time limit and no account. Pro is an optional one-time purchase for custom-order tools.
Where is my data stored?
Only in your browser on this device (local storage). There is no account and nothing is uploaded to us. That also means clearing your browser data deletes it, so download a backup from Settings now and then. You can restore that file on another device.
How does Pro work? Is it a subscription?
No subscription. You pay $9 once through Stripe and Pro unlocks in that browser. Because there are no accounts, the unlock lives in the browser you bought it in. If you switch devices or clear your browser, email us your Stripe receipt and we’ll help you unlock it again.
What if something goes wrong with Pro?
Email truellobrands@gmail.com with your receipt and we’ll help you get it sorted.
What hourly rate and margin should I use?
There’s no single right answer. Use what you’d need to earn for your time to be worth it where you live, and check what similar bakers near you charge. Many small food businesses aim for a margin somewhere between 30% and 60% on top of all costs, but treat that as a starting point, not a rule. Fairbake shows you the profit at any price so you can decide.
Why does it ask for a “cup weight”?
If you buy flour by the pound but measure it in cups, Fairbake needs to know how much a cup weighs to convert. It fills in a typical value for common ingredients (for example about 120 g for a cup of all-purpose flour) and you can change it. For the most accurate costs, weigh a cup of your own.
Does it work for cottage food, candles or soap?
It’s built for baking, but anything made from ingredients bought in bulk works the same way. Fairbake doesn’t give legal or tax advice. Check your local cottage food rules, permits and sales tax before you sell.
Who makes Fairbake?
Fairbake is made by Truello Brands, a small independent studio. We’re not affiliated with any bakery software company and we don’t sell your data or run ads. The only analytics is cookieless Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts anonymous visits; your recipes and prices never leave your browser. Questions and suggestions go to truellobrands@gmail.com, and we read every one.
